“What’s in it for me?”
If you own a business or run a blog, remember those fives simple words because that’s all that your customers or readers want to know!
(Note: this post was inspired by a thought provoking post, Switch up your influences & build relationships: blogs to cut & add in 2009, that I recently read on Jared Goralnick’s Technotheory blog.)
That’s very true. However, it all depends on your audience, I think. In my blog, few of my audiences are my friends and family, so I tried to “personalize” it as much as I can while still keeping the “What’s in it for me?” principle.
Just want to say thanks for your postings though. It shed some lights to me as a beginner.

Thanks for the link, but back to the point: I’m continually amazed at how much of the web is not adding value. Or at least not by my definition.
When people write online I think they ought to ask themselves
1. Am I saying something unique that people can act upon or learn from?
2. AND: would I be better off just posting a link to someone who addressed this better than me?
If the answer is the latter then people should save themselves the trouble and just link to that other person. It saves everyone time and provides the most value.
Always enjoy your writing, Mark, thanks!
Jared – agree 100%…value must be added or you’re just wasting time.
It’s so tempting to start creating content just to get attention … which can lead to just caring about ourselves (or maybe comes from that selfishness).
Love the people and have fun. There’s six words that have kept me in business. Just serve the audience over and over.
